For predicting HCC, the optimal cut-off value of AFP/(AST*ALT) is 1.603, and the sensitivity and specificity were 82.8% and 72.7%, respectively, which were significantly higher than the AFP and AFP/WBC.The serum AFP levels based on correction of liver inflammation can effectively improve the diagnostic performance of HCC, providing a new indicator that is simple, economical and pervasive for clinic.

In patients with no history of HCC (N = 416), increased AST, bilirubin, ALRI, and ALBI score, and decreased albumin and platelets were significantly associated with an increased risk of HCC development, at univariate analysis.

Importantly, ISG20 levels were strongly correlated with the levels of AST, ALT, total and direct bilirubin among HCC patients (Pearson's r = 0.43, 0.35, 0.34, 0.3; <i>P</i><0.0001, respectively).

In nanoDEN-induced HCC mice treated with LSW-ET by oral (po) or intragastric gavage (ig), we observed an alleviation of serum ALT and AST levels, amelioration in histopathological stainings, and an inhibition in liver tumor growth.

A multivariate analysis identified a body mass index <25kg/m2 (hazard ratio (HR)=1.55, p<0.017), macroscopic vascular invasion (HR=1.63, p< 0.001), an AST level >38 U/L (HR=2.65, p<0.001), Child Pugh B stage (HR=2.59, p<0.001) and a systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) ≥600 × 109 (HR 1.72, p=0.002) as independent risk factors for OS in advanced HCC.

To elucidate its mechanism of action, the following parameters were determined including: vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as a marker of angiogenesis; hepatic tyrosine kinase (HTK) as a marker for tumor growth; serum alpha fetoprotein (AFP) as a marker for hepatocarcinoma; aspartate and alanine aminotransferases (AST & ALT) as liver function test; malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) as markers of antioxidant activity.
