After adjustments were made for sex, disease duration, and HbA(1)c, no associations were found between any CA polymorphisms or haplotypes with any type of retinopathy in T1DM or T2DM.
Influence of chromium-enriched yeast on blood glucose and insulin variables, blood lipids, and markers of oxidative stress in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
To investigate the effect of insulin on cholesterol synthesis in vivo we measured plasma mevalonic acid (MVA) concentrations using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in six non-obese patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) [four men, two women; age 57.5 +/- 2.2 years (mean +/- SEM); glycated haemoglobin (HbA1) 8.5 +/- 0.5%; total cholesterol (TC) 5.7 +/- 0.5 mmol L-1, triglyceride (TG) 3.8 +/- 0.9 mmol L-1] and six non-diabetic, sex- and age-matched control subjects (age 55.7 +/- 2.8 years; HbA1 6.5 +/- 0.1%; TC 5.4 +/- 0.3 mmol L-1, TG 1.2 +/- 0.1 mmol L-1).
In a randomized crossover study, we measured the hepatic secretion rate of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB) in seven patients with well-controlled non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) (HbA1 8.4 +/- 0.4% [mean +/- SE]) on two occasions: during a 13-h hyperinsulinemic (plasma insulin concentration 586 +/- 9.7 pmol/l) euglycemic (plasma glucose concentration 5.2 +/- 0.1 mmol/l) clamp; and during a 13-h saline (control) infusion.
The relationship between diabetic macroangiopathy or microangiopathy and apolipoprotein B (apoB) polymorphism was studied in 139 male and 129 female patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) mellitus, comprising consecutive patients with poor diabetic control (HBA1 13.2% +/- 2.7 (SD)) referred to our hospital.
The apoE4-carrying NIDDM patients with hypercholesterolemia (n = 39) showed significantly higher fasting plasma glucose (8.4 vs. 7.2 mM, P less than 0.05), HbA1 (9.3 vs. 8.1%, P less than 0.05), and percentage of ideal body weight values (116 vs. 102%, P less than 0.01) than the apoE4-carrying NIDDM patients with normolipidemia (n = 26), whereas there was no significant difference in their levels between the apoE3/3-carrying NIDDM patients with hypercholesterolemia (n = 47) and normolipidemia (n = 128).
