Given the importance of SLC11A1 in susceptibility to PTB, this study provides a framework for further studies on the structure and dynamics of SLC11A1 in other organisms, to gain 3D structural insight into the macromolecular arrangements of SLC11A1 but also suggesting a potential mechanism which divalent metal ion transport is conducted.
SLC11A1 is a membrane transporter that is expressed in late endosomes of antigen presenting cells involved in the immunopathogenic events leading to T1DM.Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) has been reported to be a possible trigger in the development of T1DM.
Relationship between Crohn's disease, infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis and SLC11A1 gene polymorphisms in Sardinian patients.
The frequency of the SLC11A1 469+14C allele was higher in the subset of study participants who tested positive for MAP DNA (P = 0.02, OR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.06-2.29).
