<b>Aim:</b> The authors aimed to study cognitive-enhancement- and neuroprotective-effects of Brahmi on novel object recognition memory and GABAergic neuronal density, defined by the presence of calcium binding proteins (CBPs; calbindin (CB), parvalbumin (PV), and calretinin (CR)) in a sub-chronic (2 mg/kg, Bid, ip) phencyclidine (PCP) rat model of schizophrenia.
We report reductions in somatostatin and vasoactive intestinal peptide mRNAs in prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices in bipolar disorder (n=31) and schizophrenia (n=35) compared to controls (n=34) and increased calbindin mRNA in schizophrenia.

These observations suggest that, in schizophrenia, a number of CB-containing cells that normally do not express NR2A might become NR2A-expressing or, perhaps not mutually exclusively, the number of CB-expressing cells might be increased and these cells express NR2A.
