Recent studies have shown that WISP1 can regulate low-grade inflammation in obese mice, and circulating WISP1 levels are associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.
This study assessed circulating WISP-1/CCN4 levels in a) paired liquid meal tests and hyperinsulinemic- euglycemic clamps (cohort I, n = 26), b) healthy individuals (cohort II, n = 207) and c) individuals with different stages of obesity and glucose tolerance (cohort III, n = 253).
Moreover, we observed an increase in WISP1 gene expression in adipose tissue from both diet-induced and leptin-deficient ob/ob obese mice, suggesting that WISP1 could be involved in the pathophysiological onset of obesity.
