These results suggest a significant association between GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism and susceptibility to asthma and that the GSTP1 Val105Val genotype may be protective against developing this disease.
We genotyped Ile105Val and Ala114Val in the Multicenter Allergy Study cohort (85 children with asthma, 123 controls) and asthmatic children from Freiburg (n = 178).
GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism was determined using a single based extension method in 88 AIA subjects and compared to 154 aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA) subjects and 119 normal healthy controls (NC) recruited from the Korean population.
High EPHX1 activity was associated with an increased risk for lifetime asthma (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.98) which varied by GSTP1 Ile105Val genotype and by residential proximity to major roads (p for interaction = 0.006 and 0.03, respectively).
If confirmed by independent studies, our results suggest that GSTP1 Ile105Val genotype strongly determines the progression of BHR to physician-diagnosed asthma in the general population.
The Ile105Val allele and a SNP in the upstream promoter region (SNP1: rs6591255, putative transcription factor 1 binding site) were associated with asthma and wheezing outcomes, an association observed in two cohorts of the CHS recruited in different years.

To assess the effect of IL13 (-1112 C>T and Arg110Gln), GSTP1 (Ile105Val), and CYP1A1 (Ile462Val) on asthma risk and ETS exposure, we recruited 201 unrelated children and classified them into four groups: (1) control without ETS exposure; (2) control with ETS exposure; (3) with asthma and with ETS exposure and (4) with asthma and without ETS exposure.
Children carrying GSTP1 rs1138272 or rs1695 minor alleles may constitute a susceptible population at increased risk of asthma associated with air pollution.
These results support the existence of a significant association between GSTP1 rs1695 and IL13 rs20541 SNPs, with susceptibility to asthma, in the population studied.
