After stratifying for FTO rs9939609 genotypes (TT, TA and AA), the odds ratios (95 % confidence intervals) of HBP in obese versus non-obese children were 4.26 (3.18-5.71), 5.13 (2.96-8.90) and 10.37 (1.59-67.43), respectively, with adjustment for age, gender and pubertal status.
The present study demonstrated that FTO rs9939609 and combined SNPs were significantly associated with risk of hypertension, which seems to be dependent on BMI.
Common genetic variants of FTO rs9939609 have positive associations with BMI and neck circumference and MC4R rs17782313 in women, but a negative association with diastolic and mean blood pressure in men with hypertension.
Although two SNPs, rs9939609 and rs1558902, were not significantly associated with hypertension, obesity, metabolic syndrome or any metabolic parameters, additive and recessive models of rs1121980 were strongly associated with plasma immunoreactive insulin (IRI) level and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), even after adjusting for confounding factors such as age, gender and body mass index.
