We previously reported that Capn4 also plays an essential role in the migration of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells through regulation of (MMP-2) by nuclear factor-kappa B activation.
Transfection of NPC cell lines with siRNA targeting Ezrin significantly inhibited NPC cell migration and invasion, and downregulated the mRNA expression level of MMP2; however, no effect was observed on MMP9 mRNA expression.
In conclusion, this study revealed that EGCG could inhibit the metastatic activity of human NPC cells by downregulating the protein expression of MMP-2 through modulation of the Src signaling pathway, suggesting that EGCG may be a potential candidate for chemoprevention of NPC.
Through reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‑qPCR) and western blot analyses, the expression of metastasis‑associated genes, including E‑cadherin, metastatic tumor antigen 1, matrix metalloproteinase‑2 and metalloproteinase inhibitor 2 were demonstrated to be regulated by miR‑122 in NPC cells.
In summary, our data showed that RIE inhibited the migration and invasion of NPC cells by suppressing the expression of MMP-2 by down-regulating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway, suggesting that Rubus idaeus may serve as chemotherapeutic and chemopreventive agent for NPC.
Among the 15 SNPs detected in the meta-analysis, miR-146a (rs2910164, C>G), HCG9 (rs3869062, A>G), HCG9 (rs16896923, T>C), MMP2 (rs243865, C>T), GABBR1 (rs2076483, T>C), and TP53 (rs1042522, C>G) were associated with decreased susceptibility to NPC, while GSTM1 (+/DEL), IL-10 (rs1800896, A>G), MDM2 (rs2279744, T>G), MDS1-EVI1 (rs6774494, G>A), XPC (rs2228000, C>T), HLA-F (rs3129055, T>C), SPLUNC1 (rs2752903, T>C; and rs750064, A>G), and GABBR1 (rs29232, G>A) were associated with increased susceptibility to NPC.
Protein levels of the signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3), phospho-STAT3 (p-STAT3), mouse anti-human cyclin D2 (CCND2) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) were tested by western blotting. miRNA-124-3p expression in NPC was markedly downregulated compared to postnasal catarrh tissues (P<0.001); miRNA-124-3p expression showed close linkage with clinical stages, regional lymph node involvement and T stages (all P<0.001). miRNA-124-3p expression was lower in the 7 NPC cell lines than NP69 cells (all P<0.05).
The results suggested that the Arg399Gln polymorphism of XRCC1 gene, the 1G/2G polymorphism of MMP-1 gene, the RsaI polymorphism of CYP2E1 gene, the -1306C>T polymorphism of MMP-2 gene and the Arg72Pro polymorphism of p53 gene might be related to increased risks of nasopharyngeal carcinoma under different genetic comparison models, while the Arg194Trp and Arg280His polymorphisms of XRCC1 gene and the 309T>G polymorphism of MDM2 gene might not contribute to the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Capn4 is a marker of poor clinical outcomes and promotes nasopharyngeal carcinoma metastasis via nuclear factor-κB-induced matrix metalloproteinase 2 expression.
For MMP2-1306 C>T polymorphism, significant associations were observed under three genetic models both in overall comparison and in a hospital-based subgroup, and in oral cavity cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer under dominant model as well.
Our results provide molecular epidemiological evidence that the MMP2-1306C/T promoter polymorphism is associated with NPC risk, and this association is especially noteworthy in heavy smokers.
The results showed that serum levels of all the four proteins were indeed higher in NPC patients versus healthy controls and that the use of a three-marker panel (cystatin A, manganese superoxide dismutase and matrix metalloproteinase 2) can contribute to a better NPC detection than each marker alone.

Our findings suggest that the genetic polymorphisms or haplotype in the MMP2 promoter may play a role in mediating the susceptibility to NPC in Chinese populations.
The purpose of this study is to determine if the stress hormone norepi can influence the expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, and VEGF in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tumors by using three NPC tumor cell lines.
To investigate the roles of MMPs in the progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the expression of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-12, MMP-13, MMP-14, and MMP-19 was explored by microarray assay.
