In a nested case-control study of 380 women with incident breast cancer and 662 controls within the Singapore Chinese Health Study, we found no association between either green tea intake or gene polymorphisms of MTHFR (C677T and A1298C) and TYMS (1494 ins/del) and breast cancer risk.
We investigated independent and joint effects of B vitamin intake as well as two polymorphisms of a key one-carbon metabolizing gene [i.e., methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T and 1298A>C] on breast cancer risk.
We examined the association of two common MTHFR polymorphisms (C677T and A1298C) and their haplotypes in a candidate-gene association study, involving 300 female patients with BC and 283 healthy women.
Overall, no significant associations were found between MTHFR A1</span>298C polymorphism and breast cancer risk when all studies pooled into the meta-analysis (AC vs. AA: OR=0.99, 95% CI 0.94-1.05; CC vs. AA: OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.90-1.09; dominant model: OR=0.99, 95% CI 0.95-1.04; and recessive model: OR=0.98, 95% CI 0.90-1.08).
With respect to A1298C polymorphism, no significant association with breast cancer risk was demonstrated in overall, ethnicity- and menopausal status-based population.
The present data suggest that germ-line polymorphisms of C677T, C1298A for MTHFR and R2 for FV are associated in breast cancer and may be additional prognostic markers related to breast cancer survival.
