To study the effect of these two cytokines, we have examined changes in morphology and in activation profile of the glial cells after TGF β and IL 6 neutralization during CM in cortex and cerebellum of the Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) infected male swiss albino mice.
Patients with acute CM had significantly higher concentrations of IL-6 (<i>P</i> < 0.001) and IL-10 (<i>P</i> = 0.0003) than those presenting with acute SMA.
IFN-gamma and IL-6 genotypes may play roles in the development of severe malaria and could contribute to the relative frequency of severe malarial anemia or cerebral malaria in exposed populations.
