Compared with the type 2 diabetes group, 12 weeks of EGB treatment caused very slight pathological changes in the Leydig cells, significantly increased the concentrations of blood LH and T, markedly elevated the levels of mRNA in StAR and P450scc and induced an ascending tendency of the expressions of P450c17, 17beta-HSD3 and 3beta-HSD1.
The results showed that prenatal chronic nicotine exposure causes IUGR in rats (P<0.01); in response to nicotine exposure, maternal serum corticosterone levels were elevated at mid- and late-gestations (P<0.05); mRNA expressions of StAR and P450scc increased in maternal adrenals (P<0.05 or 0.01) but decreased in fetal adrenals (P=0.16 or 0.11).
This study demonstrates that the mechanism by which ovarian steroid biosynthesis is altered during acute nephrosis involves damage at the P450scc and StAR mRNA synthesis and processing.
More prolonged SE was associated with greater P450scc expression and longer latencies to the development of seizures, suggesting that enhanced steroid synthesis retards epileptogenesis.
