Association between lung cancer risk and single nucleotide polymorphisms in the first intron and codon 178 of the DNA repair gene, O6-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase.
To further verify whether a different prevalence of MGMT promoter methylation is observed in lung tumors with a different tumor histology, gender, and smoking status, 220 lung tumors were collected to evaluate the status of MGMT promoter methylation and p53 mutation using methylation-specific PCR (MSP) and direct sequencing, respectively.
Here, we applied methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction to compare the frequencies of the methylated promoter of p16 and O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) genes in lung tumors from 122 patients with non-small cell lung cancer, including 81 smokers and 41 never-smokers.
