Quality of care was measured over a 2-year period using 6 indicators: disease monitoring (eye examination, hemoglobin A1c testing, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol testing), prescribing appropriate medications (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor blockers and statins), and adverse clinical outcomes (emergency department visits for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia).
Here, we tested the hypothesis that the response to pro-angiogenic molecules such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), endothelin-1 (ET-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) is altered by hyperglycemia.

The present study showed that the interaction between the DD genotype of angiotensin-converting enzyme and chronic hyperglycaemia (expressed by HbA1c level) is related to higher plasma levels of atherogenic lipoproteins, such as apoB and cholesterol, in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
We tested the possible interaction between ACE I/D polymorphism and uncontrolled type 1 diabetes by measuring glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) during normoglycemia ( approximately 5 mmol/L) and hyperglycemia ( approximately 15 mmol/L) in 9 normoalbuminuric, normotensive type 1 diabetic subjects with the II genotype and 18 matched controls with the ID or DD genotype.
Some of them might be found among the genes coding for components of the renin angiotensin system (renin, angiotensinogen, angiotensin I-converting enzyme, angiotensin receptors), some may regulate the way in which cells manage hyperglycemia (e.g. aldose reductase).
