Taken together with possible involvement of interleukin-6 in the pathogenesis of heart failure and muscle wasting, inhibition of interleukin-6 receptor signalling by tocilizumab may be a safe and reasonable approach in the treatment of active TA with heart failure and muscle wasting.
Herein, we report for the first time a case involving a 34-year-old man with TAK who was refractory to four different biologic agents, such as one selective T-cell co-stimulation modulator (abatacept), one anti-interleukin-6 receptor monoclonal antibody (tocilizumab), and two tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors (infliximab and etanercept), but eventually achieved remission with RTX.
Our aim was to describe our experience with tocilizumab (interleukin 6 receptor antagonist) treatment in children with Takayasu arteritis and to review previous studies regarding tocilizumab use in Takayasu arteritis patients.
