This study aimed to investigate whether changes in the megakaryocytic expression of GATA-1, pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6 and IL-8), and CD9 affect platelet counts and dysmegakaryopoiesis in patients with PCN and MDS.
A significant negative impact in FVC (% pred), PImax (% pred) and PEmax (% pred) was observed in patients with MDS and higher levels of IL-8 or increased activity of NF-kB.
To evaluate interleukin-8 (IL-8) plasma levels and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) in patients with MDS and to test possible correlation between IL-8 and NF-Kb, a total of 45 individuals were analyzed: 25 consecutive adult de novo MDS patients and 20 sex and age-matched healthy elderly volunteers.
Together, these studies demonstrate that the IL8 receptor CXCR2 is an adverse prognostic factor in MDS/AML and is a potential therapeutic target against immature leukemic stem cell-enriched cell fractions in MDS and AML.
