Univariate analysis revealed shorter ECMO duration, higher body mass index, preimplantation creatinine > 100 mmol/l, lower preimplantation serum albumin, and the development of stroke or limb ischemia on ECMO to be significantly associated with mortality while on ECMO.
CVD incidence (CVD death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, revascularization, angina, or ischemic electrocardiogram) was associated with diabetes duration, most recent albumin excretion rate (AER), updated mean triglycerides, baseline hypertension, baseline LDL cholesterol, and most recent HbA<sub>1c</sub> Major atherosclerotic cardiovascular events (CVD death, MI, or stroke) were associated with diabetes duration, most recent AER, baseline systolic blood pressure, baseline smoking, and updated mean HbA<sub>1c</sub> Compared with findings in DCCT/EDIC, traditional risk factors similarly predicted CVD; however AER predominates in EDC and HbA<sub>1c</sub> in DCCT/EDIC.

We identified 4 risk factors for acute heart failure after stroke: atrial fibrillation (odds ratio [OR], 5.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.5-14.0; P < .001), history of cardiac disease (OR, 3.6; 95% CI, 1.3-9.1; P = .01), Glasgow Coma Scale score ≤ 8 (OR, 4.5; 95% CI, 1.7-12.0; P = .003), and serum albumin < 35 g/L (OR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.4-8.4; P = .008).

The positive association of hypertension and albumin levels with cognitive functioning and the negative association of stroke occurrence with cognitive functioning were replicated in both countries.
Strong correlates predicting survival were estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), serum albumin, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist device, mechanical ventilation, peak oxygen capacity, hemodynamics, inotrope support, and type of heart disease with less predictive variables including antiarrhythmic agents, history of stroke, vascular disease, prior malignancy, and prior tobacco use.

In a multiple linear regression model, independent correlates of albumin excretion (P < 0.05) included: fasting blood sugar, treated diabetes, treated hypertension, higher systolic blood pressure, lower diastolic blood pressure, abnormal electrocardiogram, a history of stroke, the degree of American Indian heritage, and lower household income.
