Labial salivary gland (LSG) sections from 15 patients with Mikulicz disease and 18 patients with SS were examined for subsets of the infiltrating lymphocytes, expression patterns of messenger RNA (mRNA) for cytokines/chemokines, and relationships between the IgG4:IgG ratio and the expression of mRNA for IL-4 or IL-10.
The aim of the present study was to assess the T cell cytokines IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 in labial salivary glands (LSG) in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and healthy controls using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.
The expression of IFN-gamma in the majority of the samples, together with a lack of IL-4 and IL-13 mRNA, suggests the predominance of a Th1 response in SS.
