We aimed to determine polymorphisms of F31I and V57I codons of AURKA gene and their association with cancer prognosis in patients compared with controls in an eastern population of Iran.A case-control study was conducted on specimens from 100 patients and 100 age- and gender-matched controls.
Overall, significant association was observed between F31I and cancer risk when all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis (recessive model: OR = 1.14, 95 % CI = 1.06-1.24; AA vs. TT: OR = 1.12, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.24; A vs. T: OR = 1.05, 95 % CI = 1.01-1.09).
This meta-analysis suggests that the STK15 rs2273535 polymorphism is a candidate gene polymorphism for cancer susceptibility, especially in Asian populations.
Our results indicate statistical evidence of an association between the STK15 F31I polymorphism and the increased risk of overall cancer in four genetic models: AA vs. TA+TT, AA vs. TT, AA vs. TA, and A vs. T. In a stratified analysis by cancer type, there was an increased risk of breast cancer in four genetic models: AA vs. TA+TT, AA vs. TT, AA vs. TA, and A vs. T, as well as esophageal cancer in two genetic models: AA vs. TA+TT and AA vs. TA.
