To explore the role of genetic variants of angiotensinogen (AGT M235T), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE I/D), and angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R A1166C) as predictors of diabetes risk and to examine their combined effects on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.
Controls did not (yet) have diabetes. We genotyped ACE (G4656C, which is in complete linkage disequilibrium with the ACE insertion/deletion polymorphism), angiotensinogen (M235T), and angiotensin II type 1 receptor (A1166C).
We examined angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) DD/II and angiotensinogen (Atg) M235T polymorphism in a cohort of Chinese patients with type II diabetes with an average duration of diabetes of 14 years.
Relative nocturnal systolic and diastolic pressures in patients with diabetes were higher than in healthy age- and height-matched controls; no association was found with the angiotensinogen gene M235T polymorphism.
In conclusion, our results suggest that V16A polymorphism of the Mn-SOD gene is not related to the development of diabetes and progression of DR, but is associated with DME in Korean type 2 diabetic patients.
