Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between the preoperative serum leptin levels and postoperative VTE incidence in osteoarthritis (OA) patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at our institute.We conducted a prospective and cross-sectional study in these OA patients from March 2014 to March 2016.
The synovium and IPFP in the MetS-OA group secreted more leptin and less adiponectin than those in the non-MetS-OA group (Leptin: 5.32 vs. 1.28 in synovium, respectively; <i>p</i>= 0.028; 6.44 vs. 0.88 in IPFP, respectively; <i>p</i>= 0.017.
We have shown that obesity's involvement in OA is not only limited to the mechanical weight exerted on the joints (mechanical hypothesis), but also induces an inflammatory state by different mechanisms, including increased leptin expression, compromised gut mucosa, and/or gut microbiota disruption.
