In this study, we attempt to replicate the possible association of the CAA insertion and a nearby TATC deletion with schizophrenia in 204 complete and incomplete triads and in a sample of 462 unrelated cases and 153 controls, all of Caucasian origin.
We examined the frequency of this CAA insertion in 57 European American subjects with schizophrenia and 243 controls, and in a smaller group of African American subjects (N=72; 20 with schizophrenia).
Because the 3'-untranslated regions of eukaryotic genes are known to regulate gene expression, the increased frequency of the Nogo CAA insert in schizophrenia may contribute to abnormal regulation of Nogo gene expression, and may indicate a role for Nogo in disturbed neurodevelopment in schizophrenia.
