To exploit a possible role of Mesothelin in cervical cancer treatment, we analysed Mesothelin expression in 79 cervical carcinomas and aligned expressions patterns with tumor growth parameters.
Mesothelin immunoreactivity (>5% of tumor cells) was present in 55% of ovarian serous carcinomaswith no difference in expression between high-grade and low-grade serous tumors (P = 0.82).
This large study of the MSLN gene and protein expression in common carcinomas provides data for future investigations that evaluate the utility of mesothelin/megakaryocyte potentiating factor as a potential serum tumor marker or target of immunotoxin-based therapy in human cancers.
In a previous analysis of gene expression in pancreatic adenocarcinoma using serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE), we found that the tag for the mesothelin mRNA transcript was present in seven of eight SAGE libraries derived from pancreatic carcinomas but not in the two SAGE libraries derived from normal pancreatic duct epithelial cells.
