We searched PubMed, Embase, and reference lists for articles through November 2016 describing studies that compared fecal level of elastase-1 with results from a reference standard, direct method (secretin stimulation test), or indirect method (measurement of fecal fat) for detection of EPI.
Five per cent of people older than 70 years and ten per cent older than 80 years have pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) with a faecal elastase-1 below 200 μg g<sup>-1</sup> stool, and 5% have severe PEI with faecal elastase-1 below 100 μg g<sup>-1</sup> stool.
Forty-one (80.4%) patients presented with pancreatic insufficiency (EL-1 fecal < 100 µg/g): 17 (41.5%) were homozygous, 14 were heterozygous (34.1%) and 10 were non-DeltaF508 (24.4%).
