<b>Objective:</b> The present study was conducted for exploring the influence of fibroblast growth factor 2 receptor (<i>FGFR2</i>) gene polymorphisms on osteoporosis occurrence risk in the Chinese population.<b>Methods:</b> Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was conducted for the genotyping of polymorphism in 145 osteoporosis patients and 123 controls.
The issue as to whether the Sca-1(+) cell-based FGF2 therapy is effective in yellow marrow is highly relevant to its clinical potential for osteoporosis, as most red marrows in a person of an advanced age are converted to yellow marrows.
Our initial and replicate association studies and subsequent gene expression analyses support the conclusion that these three polymorphisms of the FGF2 gene may contribute to susceptibility to osteoporosis, most likely through their effects on altered binding affinity for specific miRNAs.
