The FL/FLT3 interaction between leukemia cells and bone marrow stromal cells expressing FL at high levels should contribute, at least in part, to persistent minimal-residual disease of MLL-rearranged leukemia in bone marrow.
Systematic administration of soluble human Flt3-L (500 microg/kg/day) for 10 days protected mice from leukemia, with 11 of 17 mice tumor free at week 8 (64.7%) The tm isoform of Flt3-L also was protective.
The well-documented involvement of this ligand-receptor pair in physiological hematopoiesis brought forth the question whether FLT3R and FL might also have a role in the pathobiology of leukemia.
