To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome of minimally invasive spine surgery transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in patients with spondylolisthesis and poor bone quality, performed with rigid instrumentation using bone cement [poly(methylmethacrylate)]-augmented fenestrated pedicle screws.
Randomized or nonrandomized controlled studies published from January 2000 to April 2018 that compared minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) with traditional open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TO-TLIF) for treating single-level spondylolisthesis grades 1 and 2 were retrieved.
From January 2014 to March 2018, a retrospective study of 88 patients with spondylolisthesis and osteoporosis treated with minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) using the conventional pedicle screw (CPS group, n = 52) and the fenestrated pedicle screw (FPS group, n = 36) was performed with a follow-up of 30 months (range, 10-58 months).
A total of 165, 76, and 73 patients treated with MIS TLIF for spondylolisthesis had complete PRO data for VAS back, VAS leg, and ODI, respectively, and were thus included in the analysis for the respective PRO.
This study aims to report acute and chronic neurologic complications encountered with MIS surgery for spondylolisthesis, specifically, the incidence of nerve root injury and clinical and radiographic outcomes.
However, at the time of the last follow-up, both groups had similar ODI scores and complication, slip reduction, and spinal fusion rates (P > .05).Compared with PLIF, MIS-TLIF for grade I/II spondylolisthesis can achieve similar reduction and fusion results with better short-term quality of life, shorter hospital stays, less estimated blood loss, and shorter operative times.
