We attempted to identify the ABO genotypes of 31 human leukemia and lymphoma cell lines stored in our laboratory using three methods: the PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA), PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and the direct DNA sequencing of PCR products.
After the introduction of red blood cell transfusions, which were made possible by the landmark discoveries of the ABO blood groups by Karl Landsteiner, and the establishment of bone marrow transplantation by E. Donnall Thomas to exchange the entire hematopoietic system of a patient suffering from leukemia, the introduction of patient-tailored cytotoxic cellular populations to eradicate malignant cell populations in vivo pioneered by Carl H. June, represents the third major and broadly applicable milestone in the development of human cellular therapies within the rapidly developing field of applied biomedical research of the last one hundred years.
Three year survival was 40% for ABO matched and 43% for ABO mismatched patients (P = .35), Leukemia free survival rates were also comparable between groups (37%; 95% CI, 32-43; for ABO matched vs. 38%; 95% CI, 33-42; for ABO mismatched; P = .87).
The possibility of an association between ABOblood phenotypes and other, more specific, personality traits, such as hysteroid or obsessional is presently under investigation.
