In children with a cotinine level less than 0.1 ng/mL, the risk of AD increased for those carrying 2 GSTP1 Ile-105 alleles (OR, 6.63; 95% CI, 1.46-30.18).
Our study suggests that the GSTP1 Val105 allele is an important determinant of susceptibility to AD in preschool age children and increased oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of AD.
After controlling for age, sex, and atopic eczema, compared with participants carrying any Val-105 allele, children who were homozygotic for GSTP1 Ile-105 had a significantly increased risk of physician-diagnosed asthma (adjusted odds ratio [adjOR], 1.94; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08 to 3.59).
