HMGA1 IRS was generated from breast tumors in Korean women as the product of staining intensity (weak = 1, moderate = 2, strong = 3) and percent positive cells (< 5% = 0, 5-30% = 1, 30-60% = 2, > 60% = 3), and stratified into three groups: low (< 3), intermediate (3-6), high (> 6).
Furthermore, the enforced expression of HMGA1 by transfection with a HMGA1 promoter enhanced cellular oncogenic properties, including proliferation, migration and invasion, and a tissue microarray revealed that breast tumors expressing human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) showed higher expression levels of HMGA1 (P=0.007).
Moreover, we identified a specific HMGA1 gene expression signature that was activated in a large subset of human primary breast tumours and was associated with poor prognosis.
