T<sub>H</sub>9 cells, which have been characterized in 2008 as a proinflammatory CD4 T cell subset that promotes protection against parasites and drives tissue inflammation in colitis, actually harbor potent IL-9-dependent anti-cancer properties in solid tumors and especially melanoma.
Taken together, the IL-9R(high) DP T-cell population could be a new preferential target for IL-9, which could take part in their retention within the melanoma infiltrate while also favoring their anti-tumor activity.
Adoptive transfer of tumor-antigen-specific T(H)9 cells into both WT and Rag1(-/-) mice suppressed melanoma growth; this effect was abrogated by treatment with neutralizing antibodies to IL-9.
