Elevated lipoprotein(a), hypertension and renal insufficiency as predictors of coronary artery disease in patients with genetically confirmed heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
Lipid and lipoprotein parameters, including levels of total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol; triglycerides; lipoprotein(a); apolipoprotein A-IV; and the apolipoprotein E and A-IV polymorphisms, were assessed in 177 patients who had mostly mild to moderate renal insufficiency and were followed prospectively for up to 7 yr.
Subjects with the R154X mutation, however, showed no abnormalities in lipid metabolism or coagulation except for a paradoxical 3.3-fold increase in serum lipoprotein(a) levels, nor was there any evidence of renal dysfunction in these subjects.
