A multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that tumor size [hazard ratio (HR)=2.26, p=0.005], intrahepatic metastasis (HR=2.31, p=0.011), and EpCAM positivity (HR=1.74, p=0.038) were associated with tumor recurrence.
Furthermore, in an in vivo mouse model, platinum agents preferentially eliminated EpCAM-negative cells in comparison with EpCAM-positive cells, suggesting that the remaining subpopulation of EpCAM-positive cells contributes to tumor recurrence after chemotherapy.
Considering the documented efficacy of anti-EpCAM bispecific antibody in various metastatic cancers, clinical application of our approach may be justified in patients with minimal residual disease at high risk for tumor recurrence.
