In this study, positive correlations between NTS and interleukin (IL)-8 were identified at both the mRNA and protein levels in 71 fresh HCC tissues and 100 paraffin-embedded HCC tissues.
The NTS/NTSR1 complex is a potential drug target for HCC, because it is an upstream regulator in the chain of cellular events involved in HCC progression.
Significantly increased IL-8 protein was confirmed in 90.91% of NTS(+) HCC samples and significantly positively correlated to the levels of NTS protein in cancer tissues (P = 0.036), which implied activation of NTS/IL-8 pathway in HCC.
The chromatographic properties, immunoreactivity, and unusual stability of the C-terminal fragment found in the hepatoma patient suggest that it is a substance distinct from NT itself and is released specifically by the fibrolamellar hepatoma.
