Analysis of publicly available microarray datasets showed an inverse pattern of c-MYC and p27 RNA expression in primary acute myeloid leukemia, prostate cancer and tongue squamous cell carcinoma samples.
At diagnosis, p21 methylation was not detected in any case of AML or ALL. p27 methylation occurred in 2 (4%) AML patients and in 1 (4%) ALL patient. p57 methylation occurred in 1 (2%) AML patient and in 1 (4%) ALL patient.
Our present study focused on the expression and prognostic significance of cyclin A1 and a panel of cell cycle regulatory proteins including cyclin A2, cyclin B1, cyclin E, CDK1, CDK2, p21 and p27 in bone marrow samples from 40 patients with AML.
Considering that elevated expression of p27 is a factor of good prognosis in AML, these results provide a new basis for developing CD44-targeted therapy in AML.
