We hypothesized that relationships of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) with PON1 and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and/or PON1 with ApoA1 under conditions of hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress might reveal HDL functionality.
In all subjects combined, age- and sex-adjusted multivariable linear regression analysis demonstrated that impaired HDL anti-inflammatory capacity was associated with hyperglycemia (β = 0.499, P < 0.001), lower PON-1 activity (β = - 0.192, P = 0.030) and higher hs-CRP (β = 0.220, P = 0.016).
Lower PON1 activity and higher oxLDL levels may be predicting factors that denote diffuse, severe or multivessel disease in CHD patients with hyperglycemia.
There was no association between PON1Q192R and either self-report of pregnancy-induced hypertension or gestational hyperglycaemia but the prevalence of reporting having a preterm birth increased with each R allele: per allele odds ratio 1.20 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 1.41].
