Structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) protein complexes, including cohesin and condensin, are increasingly being recognized for their important role in cancer and development, making it critical that we understand how these evolutionarily conserved multi-subunit protein complexes associate with and organize the genome.
Lastly, it is hoped that increased understanding will be gained concerning DMC's interactive role with microRNA-551a, 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, nuclear factor-κB, Wnt inhibitory factor-1, and heat shock protein 70 to affect the progression of cancer.
The non‑SMC condensin I complex subunit G (NCAPG) that organizes the coiling topology of individual chromatids, represents an overexpressed antigen in various types of cancer, and also contributes to restructuring chromatin into rod‑shaped mitotic chromosomes and ensuring the segregation of sister chromatid during cell division.
