RARβ hypermethylation was significantly higher in adenocarcinoma (AC) compared to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), pooled OR is 0.68 (95% CI = 0.52-0.89, p = 0.005).
In conclusion, RARβ promoter hypermethylation significantly increased in NSCLC than in non-neoplastic lung tissue and is predominant in AC, suggesting that RARβ methylation contributes to the development of NSCLC, especially AC.
In addition, aberrant methylation of HOXA1, TMEFF2, and RARB occurred in preinvasive lesions, which indicates that epigenetic alterations of these genes are involved in the early stages of pulmonary ADC development.
