Examination of 114 fresh primary breast cancer and their adjacent normal tissues showed that the expression levels of ST3Gal1 and TGFB1 were high in tumor part and the expression of two genes was positively correlated.
Moreover, high expression of ST3GAL1 was associated with poor clinical outcome in patients with late stage breast cancer and high expression of both ST3GAL1 and GFRA1 adversely impacted outcome in those with high grade tumors.
Furthermore, the level of mRNA expression encoding ST3Gal I is correlated to the intensity of staining seen with the antibody SM3, which specifically recognises underglycosylated, tumour associated MUC1.
