Quantification of CSF α-synuclein (a-syn) by an in-house ECL-based ELISA assay has been recently reported as an excellent approach for the diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), the most prevalent form of human prion disease.
Cerebrospinal fluid α-synuclein was quantified in a total of 188 sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and non-Creutzfeldt-Jakob-disease cases to determine sensitivity and specificity values and lot-to-lot variability.
An optimal cutoff value of 680 pg/mL α-synuclein results in 94% sensitivity and 96% specificity when diagnosing sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
