Taken together, our results indicate a possible way that osteopontin secreted from both NFPA cells and surrounding fibroblasts modify caldesmon expression and polymerization in fibroblasts, which may contribute to bone destruction in NFPA patients.
Osteopontin (OPN) is a pro-inflammatory protein that paradoxically protects against inflammation and bone destruction in a mouse model of endodontic infection.
Taken together, these results suggest that osteoblast-derived OPN affects the interactions among OSCC-derived epithelial cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts, which could contribute to the process of bone destruction during bone invasion by OSCC.
