The course of disseminated acanthamoebiasis may be influenced by the host's immunological status, and the observed changes in expression of TLR2 and TLR4 in the host's organs may indicate the role of these receptors in the pathomechanism of acanthamoebiasis.
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of plant extracts from Artemisia annua L. on expression of the toll-like receptors TLR2 and TLR4 in lungs of mice with acanthamoebiasis.
According to our observations, increased TLR2 and TLR4 expression in the pneumocytes, interstitial cells and epithelial cells of the bronchial tree may suggest an important role of these receptors in protective immunity against Acanthamoeba infection in the lung.
