Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with low thiopurine (S)-methyltransferase (TPMT) activity tend to respond well to AZA therapy.
The results of this study suggest that the value of TPMT genotyping before AZA therapy was limited in Chinese SLE patients, considering the low sensitivity.
The TPMT genotyping before AZA treatment is recommended for Japanese SLE patient group to avoid the AZA-induced adverse events, although detection of the patient with low TPMT activity by genotyping is still imperfect.
The TPMT genotype was determined in 120 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) together with 15 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and correlated with the effects of clinical exposure to azathioprine.
