IFN-λ1 (10 ng/mL) significantly decreased the number of S aureus colony-forming units in healthy control tissue but not in tissue from patients with CRSwNP and upregulated MUC5AC and MUC5B expression in control tissue on S aureus infection.
Baseline protein levels of the Th2-cytokines IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, and mucins MUC5AC and MUC5B were significantly higher in the IL-5(+) CRSwNP group, compared to control and IL-5(-) CRSwNP groups.
The demonstration that IFN-γ and IL-13 both significantly reduce ciliated cell differentiation and CBF in CRSwNP patients, and IL-13 additionally induces significant goblet cell hyperplasia and MUC5AC mucin expression, as well as IL-17 significantly increases MUC5B mucin expression, suggests that these inflammatory cytokines may be potential therapeutic targets in the management of CRSwNP.
