After treatment, UCP2 and B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL 2 ) genes are downregulated, and BCL 2 associated X protein, BCL 2 antagonist/killer, BCL 2 interacting killer, and Cytochrome c genes are upregulated.
In addition, oxidative stress was elevated, phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 and uncoupling protein 2 messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance were increased, B-cell lymphoma-2 protein levels were decreased, and peroxisome proliferators activated receptor gamma co-activator 1 alpha, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase , and pancreatic and duodenal homeobox-1 mRNA levels were downregulated.
The effect of FFA on sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-1c lipogenic pathway, and expression of genes involved in beta-cell functions, including AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), UCP-2 (uncoupling protein-2), IRS-2 (insulin receptor substrate-2), PDX-1 (pancreatic duodenal homeobox-1), GLUT-2 (glucose transporter-2) and B cell lymphoma/leukaemia-2 (Bcl-2) were investigated.
