BER-EP4 immunostaining was exclusively found in the nodular BCC component whereas the sarcomatoid component revealed immunostaining for α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), muscle-specific actin (MSA), calponin, and p63 in both epithelial-like and spindle-cell populations.
Finally, analysis of samples from patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma and precursors to invasive SCC demonstrated a significant correlation between p63 and VDR levels when compared with healthy normal skin control samples.
Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) assays show abundant non-transactivating p63 RNA, and little to no transactivating p63 RNA, in human basal cell carcinoma as well as in normal skin adjacent to the tumors. p63 RNA expression was not detected in brain, heart, colon, spleen, liver, or small intestine.
