We show that TGF-β2 drives expression of catalase to reduce the amount of H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> produced by T. annulata-transformed bovine macrophages, as well as by human lung (A549) and colon cancer (HT-29) cell lines.
Thus the aim of the present work was to evaluate the anti-cancer potential of different genetically modified lactic acid bacteria (GM-LAB) producing antioxidant enzymes (catalase or superoxide dismutase) or the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 (protein or DNA delivery) using a chemical induced colon cancer murine model.
We demonstrate that NDSCG and its colonic metabolite from lean microbiota induced HT-29 cell apoptosis by reducing catalase and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α as biomarkers of in vivo oxidative stress as the primary mechanism underlying its overall chemoprotection against colon cancer.
In sum, our results indicate that walnuts exhibit chemopreventive effects regarding the risk for colon cancer development by inducing expression of genes involved in detoxification (CAT, GSTT2) and by inducing growth inhibition and apoptosis in colon adenoma cells unaffected by moderate roasting.
