Studies have investigated the correlation between tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) gene polymorphisms and the susceptibility and severity of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), but the results were inconsistent.
The G/C mutation at loci 1525/1595 of TRAIL gene may induce the progression of IDD, as the down-regulation of TRAIL can aggravate the severity of the disease.
Overall, these data demonstrate that the administration of recombinant TRAIL ameliorates the severity of STZ-induced type 1 diabetes, and this effect was accompanied by the upregulation of SOCS1 expression.
These results suggested that contrary to what was observed with TNF or FasL, adenovirus mediated TRAIL gene delivery into pancreatic islets is expected to be therapeutically beneficial in the setting of experimental models of type 1 diabetes.
