To determine whether altered expression of chemokine receptors and their ligands may play a role in B-cell dysfunctions during HIV-1 infection, the expression of CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), CXCR5, and CC chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) and their respective ligands on CD19(+) B cells were examined in HIV-1-infected patients and controls.
Peripheral blood CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells, CD19(+)/20(+) B cells, and serum Igs are known to be altered by the progression of pediatric HIV-1 infection, but their evaluation as predictors of survival needs further definition.
