The Thr54 allele of the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism was associated with an increased incidence of peripheral atherosclerosis combined with T2DM in the population studied.
After excluding four SNPs due to Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium, significant associations in age-matched cohorts were found betweenT2DM and the following SNPs: rs9939609 (FTO), rs13266634 (SLC30A8), rs7961581 (TSPAN8/LGR5), and rs1799883 (FABP2).
The FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism was significantly associated with obesity (AT vs AA: OR = 2.633, 95%CI = 1.065-6.663, P = 0.036; TT vs AA: OR = 4.160, 95%CI = 1.609-10.757, P = 0.003) and metabolic syndrome (TT vs AA: OR = 2.273, 95%CI = 1.242-4.156, P = 0.008) by logistic regression with adjustment for covariates.
We conclude that the Ala54Thr polymorphism of FABP2 modulates HDL cholesterol in Mexican-Americans with T2D and that Thr54 allele carriers may be responsive in interventions that include dietary changes.
The frequencies of FABP2 Ala54Ala, Ala54Thr and Thr54Thr in T2DM cases were 18.39%, 66.66%, 14.94% and 22.72%, 61.36%, 15.90% in controls, respectively.
To analyze the effect of the fatty acid-binding protein (FABP2) gene Ala54Thr polymorphism on anthropometric and biochemical variables in response to a moderate-fat diet in overweight or obese subjects.
The TT genotype in Ala54Thr polymorphism of FABP2 gene in patients with type 2 diabetes increased dietary FA absorption, and this might increase the susceptibility to the effects of dietary lipids.
Studies on the association of fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2) A54T and promoter polymorphism, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin, and triglyceride levels are controversial.
The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2) Ala54Thr genetic polymorphism and to evaluate its association with obesity and insulin resistance in Chilean aboriginal populations.
Similarly, Ala/Ala homozygote males carrying the promoter haplotype B had decreased risk (0.33, 0.11 - 0.94, p < 0.05) of type 2 diabetes after stratification for the Ala54Thr polymorphism.
