The case-control study strongly suggested a significant association between loci rs3129878, rs498422 and rs7194 and NOA (P = 6.75 × 10<sup>-21</sup> (OR = 2.2586), P = 0.0060 (OR = 1.4013) and P = 0.0128 (OR = 1.2626) respectively).
Interestingly, the normozoospermic males with the risk genotypes of rs12097821 and rs3129878 + rs10842262 + rs12097821 were observed to have higher total sperm counts relative to non-risk genotypes, suggesting that the risk alleles of the genetic loci may not be via impairing spermatogenic ability to express susceptibility to NOA.
In further analysis, although significant signals disappeared after corrections for multiple testing, two HLA-DRA polymorphisms (rs9268644C>A, rs3129878A>C) were found to be potential markers for nasal polyp development in aspirin-tolerant asthma (p = 0.005 and 0.007, respectively) compared with the aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (p > 0.05) subgroup.
We detected variants at human leukocyte antigen (HLA) regions that were independently associated with NOA (HLA-DRA, rs3129878, p(combine) = 3.70 × 10(-16), odds ratio [OR] = 1.37; C6orf10 and BTNL2, rs498422, p(combine) = 2.43 × 10(-12), OR = 1.42).
